7 Days to Die

Has a ton of good things going for it, despite what game journalists say.

7 Days to Die is an open world game combing elements of stealth, crafting, survival, role-playing, first-person, and tower defense. It was developed by the Fun Pimps, and published by them as well for consoles, while Telltale published the console ports.

Plot

After World War 3, nuclear radiation has created an Apocalypse, and reanimated the dead as zombies. You play as a lone survivor (unless in multi-player) and must gather resources, find or create your own shelter and fend off the undead and other dangers. This is made even tougher because every seven days on the blood moon, the zombies become faster, more feral, and they know where you are.

Good Qualities

Completely open world!
Zombies.
Tons and tons of items to craft and create, from primitive weapons and tools, to chainsaws and pipe bombs.
Crafting doesn't just come from the backpack, but there are other tools you need for crafting, most of which can be crafted as well, campfires, forges, workbenches and cement mixers.
Can create your own mini-bike.
Each crafting section, misc, tools, weapons, gunsmithing, and many other abilities have their own level system. Working on each raises the skill up and raise your character's level as well.
Raising the crafting system levels increase the quality of the items in each section made, the time needed to create the item, the time needed to repair the item, and the quality loss each time an item is repaired.
Some glitches have their uses, including a very useful duplication glitch.
Some recipes can be found in the environment so keep looking.
Raising your level doesn't raise stats like most RPGs. Each time, you level up, you get five skill points to spend on raising level systems, or save ten to unlock a perk.
Different foods offer different stat boosts or decreases.
While the game had quite a rough and bare-bones start, there have been many updates that have made the game better for free.

A personal review of the game has been made by the wiki founder, Grust, check out his review User blog:DisneyVillain Reviews 7 Days to Die here as well as a second review for the updates. In addition, despite unfavorable reviews from game critics, the rating for 7 Days to Die fair well on GameFAQs with the Xbox One version having a 3.85 rating. The bugs and glitches however are legitimate enough to still warrant a Crappy Games version as well.

Game Tips

Note: A lot of these tips are from the console version which hasn't been getting updated due to Telltale's bankruptcy. The tips may be outdated with the PC version which is constantly being updated.

Spend your nights working on crafting either stone axes or arrows/bolts. Because of the leveling up crafting system, you can get your smithing skill levels up to make better tools and weapons.
Don't go destroying a source for resources i.e. trash, crates, birdnests, etc. once you're done looting. This is because unless you you have it turned off in the modded options, loot respawns in these areas eventually.
One exception to rule 2 are cars, but only if you have a wrench. This is because harvesting cars has a high chance of procurring batteries and engines, both are needed for the minibike and engines are also needed for motorized tools and the cement mixer.
When using a ranged weapon like a bow, even though these are zombies, don't go for head despite being the weak spot. The aiming is pretty difficult and the heads move around a bit so a perfect shot is very hard. Instead, shot at the zombies until they fall down then aim for the head to finish them off.
If your base or shelter isn't well protected yet and the blood moon is due to rise, find a deep lake or other area of water that's extremely deep. The zombies will sink to the bottom allowing you to float safely above.
The wasteland biome is the most dangerous area in the game. In addition to large amounts of zombies including zombie dogs, the ground has mines scattered throughout. The area is rich in resources so if you must go there for resources (Grust usually goes for buried treasure only), make sure you're well prepared with plenty of first aid kits (or first aid bandages if in a pinch) make sure you're well armored and move slowly to spot the mines. Once your business is finished, leave.
Hands down the best shelter spot in the game (if playing the standard Navezgane map rather than randomly generated world) is at 393 N 215 E in the Forest Biome. This is because the house in the spot mentioned is north of a shop in the Burnt Forest Biome and at the northwest of the house is a deep lake with a metal building in the middle which is a great place to stay during the blood moon.
When you scrap metal items (iron, brass, and lead) and glass, you'll actually lose some of the resources for the forge. For instance, one empty can is worth five iron in the forge but if you scrap it, you only get three iron. If you scrap two that only seven iron instead of ten. However despite this scrapping is still good for inventory space so you should know when to scrap metal and glass and when not. Grust's rule is if an item is common and stacks he saves them for the forge. For instance empty cans are common and stack up. Canned food stack up but aren't as common. Metal tools and weapons don't stack up and are only common in certain locations so he'll scrap them.
When you craft the mini-bike, be sure to have a shopping basket for it. It adds extra inventory which is useful for scavenging and even saving extra metal items for the forge without scrapping.
Resources for the forged ranked by importance:
- Clay: This is like the currency for the forge as a large number of recipes require it, even glass jars.
- Iron: Needed to make weapons and tools and the best hand crafted armor and upgrading concrete walls. Thankfully quite common.
- Stone: Needed to make cement which makes concrete mix. Necessary to defend your base.
- Glass: Necessary for Jars to fill with water. Useful during the early part of the game but loses appeal when you scavenge more.
- Lead: Needed to make rocket parts, buckshot (ingredient for shotgun shells) and bullet tips. Fairly useless as most ammo can be found easily by scavenging though somewhat worth grabbing.
- Brass: Only useful for bullet casings, which can already be very easily found. Extremely useless but very common metal, second only to iron.
The Iron Garden Hoe is not only useful for plant crops. It's also useful to help trees grow to their maximum potential, allowing for the best amount of lumber and two tree seeds.
Resources from gardening ranked as follows:
- Corn: Hands down the most important. It's one of the ingredients needed to make meat stew and vegetable stew, two of the best food items in the game. It's also needed for corn on the cob and making cornmeal. Cornmeal is used for cornbread and blueberry pie and is used to make grain alcohol which is used for first aid kits and gas for motorized tools and the mini-bike.
- Potatoes: An ingredient for Meat Stew and Vegetable Stew. Also used for baked potatoes.
- Mushrooms: Needed for Vegetable Stew and herbal antibiotics.
- Blueberries: Needed for herbal antibiotics, blueberry pies, snowberry juice (which keeps you warm but can poison you if you drink too much), and can be eaten plain but adds little fullness and hydration.
- Chrysanthemum: Needed for barnwood and red wood blocks for building and makes Red Tea, which cools you in hot weather and restores hydration and stamina.
- Aloe: Needed to make aloe cream which makes first aid bandages. Fairly useless when you learn to make first aid kits, but good in an emergency.
- Yucca: Needed for yucca juice which keeps you cool in hot weather and the fruit adds four fullness.
- Hops: Needed to brew beer. Although beer itself is not essential (aside from the buzz drunk status which raises stamina by two every second) it sells quite well with traders, which can aid you in buying better stuff.
- Coffee: Gives you caffeine buzz which improves your stamina over time. Weakens hydration and wellness however.
- Cotton: Needed for the minibike seat, some decorative item and to make cloth fragments which has tons of uses. Cloth fragments can also be found easily by scraping most clothes. Cotton plants are abundant in the forest biome so not a high priority, especially if you get a mini-bike seat up to 600.
- Goldenrod: Only good for Goldenrod Tea, which restores hydration and adds 0.2 wellness and removes dysentery, which antibiotics are already capable of. Extremely abundant in forest biomes. This is the least important crop
Once you have the nailgun, chainsaw, and auger, scrap or smelt any clawhammers or pickaxes you may find but keep your best steel or iron axes. This is because one random quest you find involves killing frozen lumberjack zombies with an axe.
Once you have a basket for your mini-bike, this is what I like to put in it (note: this is Grust's personal preference only):
- Mining and construction tools (ie. pickaxe, axe, chainsaw)
- extra bandages and first aid kits
- antibiotics
- leatherduster for the cold
- Gas cans and gas barrel
- Leather Poncho for hot weather
- Nailgun and wood for quick construction
- Iron Garden Hoe for planting trees
